Photorefractive Keratectomy or PRK

I have so much to blog about, but that will have to wait for a while.  If I stay too long on the computer, it starts to make my eyes go buggy.  In fact, their bugging me now!

On Friday, July 8th, I had PRK surgery.  It's a type of laser vision correction surgery.  Kind of the old school LASIK.  See, my eyes weren't compatible with the newer stuff and I had to go with the old version, if I wanted vision correction surgery at all.  I'm not sure I really understood what the difference was going to be.  I should have treated it like the major surgery it was, but I chose to treat it like LASIK, sure I would be back to church by Sunday.  Not so.  By Monday night I thought I would go crazy!

Let me explain the difference between the surgeries.  And if you are a little squeemish, I suggest you skip to the next paragragh.  In LASIK, they cut a flap in the top layer of your eye and reshape your eye with the laser so that your eye will interpret what you see correctly.   When the reshaping is done they fold that flap back over and it adhears to your eye.  With PRK, they completly remove the top layer of your eye and then reshape it.  Then you have to regrown the top layer.  Takes a bit more time to do that.

With LASIK you are pretty much seeing the next day.  With PRK, it could take up to six months before everything is really crisp and my eyes are fluxuating pretty good.  Somedays I see well, other's not so much.  The first weekend was terrible!  Everything was blurry, I couldn't read or get on the computer and the tv was really fuzzy.  By Monday night, I was so bored!  And I had so much to do and couldn't see to get it done!  I so wasn't prepared.

Scott helped out a lot on the weekend, but had to return to work on Monday.   By Tuesday, the kids had places they had to be and my vision wasn't great.  Not terrible, but not great.  And yes, I did drive.  I had to!  Luckily they were all close by, so no accidents.  Luckily

My eyes are still fluxuating, but not really badly.  My left eye seems to be good, but the right eye is still pretty bad.  It feels a lot like I'm running around with only one contact in.  I'm not really feeling the advantage of the surgery, yet.  I'm still fussing with my eyes so much that it feels just like with contacts.

Yes, this is all normal.  They warned me all about this before the surgery. I just didn't hear them very clearly.  And I know that by Christmas I'll be really happy I can see without contacts or glasses.  I'm just really ready to be able to read without having to rest my eyes every minute, because the words are blurring!

It may take another week or so before I can blog about all the fun stuff we've been doing this summer, but I will!  Keep checking back!
